Everyone who has seen Avengers would know about Thanos and his staff. Of course, Bo staffs are not just fantasy weapons but were actually very common ninja weapons back in feudal Japan from the 12th to 17th century. A bo staff is essentially a long staff and can be up 9ft long. Typical weight of bo staff is 2lbs but can be significantly lower or higher depending upon construction material used in making the shaft of a bo staff. Traditional hardwood Bo staff may have been a ninja weapon back in the days, but bo staff have many modern uses. There are two distinct types of Bo staff that we would look into. Pick The Right Length Before we delve into different types of bo staff, it is best to offer you a guide to pick the right length for your bo staff. Whether you are buying a bo staff to hon your bojutsu-bo technique or trying to have some spiralling fun with your bo staff, the length of the bo staff matters. Many martial arts experts agree that the ideal length of a bo staff should be equivalent to or slightly smaller than a person's height. Sone collapsible bo staffs can be folded to level up to a person's height. Best way to measure whether a bo staff is of perfect length for you, is to measure the length from the ground all the way to the middle of your lower lip and chin. If the bo staff falls within this length, then it is a perfect length for you. Traditional Bo Staff A traditional wooden bo staff is a direct descendant of the ninja weapon we all know and love. This bo staff was used by ninja warriors for blocking, thrusting and striking during a combat. This fighting bo staff gave rise to Japanese martial arts. Today, a traditional bo staff is made for more traditional uses whether it is blocking or striking. This Bo staff is extensively used in martial arts training-especially by beginners. A hardwood bo staff is very solid so it does not break easily. It is also not very heavy- you can't do bench presses with this but it's not super light too. So you get a nice balance while practicing spinning with this kind of bo staff. This training bo staff is excellent for wrist strength training along with a little bit of speed training. For novice karate students, this bo staff is best bet to start off your long foray into the ninja art of fighting. Competition Bo Staff Compared to the martial arts or training bo staff, this type of bo staff is not meant for striking or for learning. You need this bo staff when you already know what you are doing and you are trying to get better at extreme martial arts techniques after having learnt all the basics. This performance bo staff is super light compared to the traditional bo staff for beginners. The lightness allows you to be able to spin the bo staff a lot faster or toss it a lot higher with ease. But these bo staff tricks do come as a consequence if you buy this as your first bo staff. If you use this as a traditional training bo staff, you will break it because not knowing what you are doing will cause you to drop it and hit it against the ground and that will make the bo staff weaker and break over time. Construction Of A Traditional Bo Staff Now let's look at how these two types of bo staffs are made. We are not going to look necessarily at what is on the inside because both of these bo staffs are made of wood but what is on the outside. For the traditional bo staff, there is a nice smooth finish of wood on the outside which makes it easy to add other grips to your bo staff if you want. But you don't even really need other grips because you can just use the bo staff as it is and still have full control of your staff. This bo staff will give you no issue when training various spinning, blocking or striking martial arts techniques for long hours. The hardwood bo staff is not going to slip away from sweaty hands even after you spend a dull day training in broad sunlight. Construction Of A Competition Bo Staff For all you modern day ninjas out there who want to perform stunts and advance tricks with their bo staff, go for a performance bo staff as it is constructed for this purpose alone. In sharp contrast to a training bo staff, this extreme bo staff has a coating around it that wraps around the entire length of the bo staff giving it the nice pattern. This nice design is what makes this bo staff so vibrant and flashy. As you perform your hardcore bo staff tricks-the twirls, the backspins, and all multi step maneuvers, this bo staff will shine and reflect light whenever you spin it, making it much mlre appealing when you are doing competitions or demonstrations in front of a crowd. This modern bo staff has a tendency to get a little sticky when you start sweating so if you are training a lot with this bo staff and you start sweating, your hands may get a little sticky. This drawback makes it make it harder to maneuver around the bo staff. Because of this reason this type of bo staff doesn't isn't ideal to use for a long amount of time. The issue doesn't come up when you are performing with this bo staff because you aren't holding it for long stretches of time. Now that you are aware of these two varieties of bo staffs, you can easily pick the bo staff best suited for your intended purpose. So go ahead and get yourself a ninja bo!
